ABOUT THE STATE OF GEORGIA
Part of the southeast region (under Tennessee and North Carolina, between Alabama and South Carolina, and above Florida) of the United States, the state of Georgia is the twenty-fourth largest in the area and eight largest in the population (~11 million people with over half located in its capital, metro-Atlanta).
Founded in 1733 as a British colony and name after King George II of Great Britain, the state was the last and southernmost of the original 13 established colonies. It was the fourth state to ratify the constitution.
It seceded from the union in 1861 as part of the original seven Confederate states. After the civil war, it was the last state to be restored to the union in 1870.
Less than a century later, the civil rights movement primarily led by Georgian, Martin Luther King Jr., would take hold as it transformed our state’s checkered history and helped make our country better.
The state is also known for its diversity in landscapes, natural life, and unique locations. The highest point in the state is Brasstown Bald located 4,784 feet above sea level. East of the Mississippi, Georgia is the largest area state.
